Is SPME a destructive analysis? Justify your answer.

It is somewhere between depending on how it is used. A SPME will remove target analytes, here
hydrocarbons and accelerants from the matrix, and destroy them. However, since the technique
requires much less sample than a comparable technique such as solvent extraction, it is unlikely
that any one extraction will remove all of the volatiles of interest. Ideally, only a representative
subset will be removed.
